Preparing For My First Toile Review

Over the past week and weekend i have been busy getting designs done so i could make 2 outfits for my first toile review. At the beginning of the week i was a little confused with what i was going to make but i have been really thinking about my collection and how i can make it wearable and all link together. I have been doing designs that link each sin together, for example my first 2 outfits are a ruffle dress (greed) matched with a smart jacket (pride), and then a long smart maxi dress (pride) matched with a pink corset (lust). The idea is to link them all together so they all reflect one another. Im trying to make it a fun collection that young people could see themselves wearing. I first of all toiled the outfits in calico, and then went a brought some fabric similar to what my final outfits will be made from and toiled them in that. I wanted to see what they would look like in proper fabric so i can get an idea of what i really what to use on the final ones.

Pictures will be uploaded shortly....

This Weekend

Over the weekend i have been busy getting all the designs and fabric research ready for tuesday's class. I have been working on the stand trying out ways to create ruffle's and also seeing how ripped fabric sits on the body. I have been doing designs and trying to visualise 5 outfits as a hole collection. Below are some pictures of my work ...

This Week At Uni ...

This week at uni i've been carrying on with all my research but looking more into the historical and religious meanings behind The 7 sins. I am also in the process of trying to link them all together so they are not all seperate/ individual garments. If i continue to make them all really seperate then they could all end up looking more like costume designs rather than wearable outfits. This task is gonna be pretty hard because i want them all to show the meanings behind the words but also not look to flamboyant.

I have also been told to start finalising my designs and get all my illustration ideas onto paper so i can then start putting shapes onto the stand. I need to think about what i want my final garments to look like, and also start fabric researching so i know what kind of fabrics i will be using. I need to test out some fabrics because they might not be suitable or heavy enough to carry some of the surface decoration that i am thinking about doing.

I have a busy weekend ahead of me to try and get this all done for tuesday, but if i don't do it then i could get behind with my work, and i then won't be ready to show 2 final Toiles in a couple of weeks.

Horst P Horst

Horst. P Horst is a photographer that i have been looking at as inspiration for one of the Sins. The sin that i think it fits well with is Lust. I think these images are very classic to look at, he always works in black and white, and I personally think the images benefit from that.

Trip To London ..

Yesterday I took a little trip to London for the first time in ages!! I went to see Grease at the Theatre but took the opportunity to do a bit of research and fabric shopping for my final collection. I was pretty much looking out for anything that I thought could inspire me in my work and related to my concept. I got pictures of shop windows, leaflets to browse through for interesting images, and a few fabric samples of fabrics that i could possibly end up using in my final outfits. Im not 100% sure on the fabrics that i'm gonna use yet, so im going to take another trip to london at the end of the week to research fabrics further!

The past week ...

Over the past few weeks i have been busy with getting all the research together ready to get ideas to start designing. I am putting all my final research, things that i think are very strong and represent my concept well, into an A3 sketchbook. I will then use this as my main reference point for getting ideas to design clothes. I have also started looking briefly into fabrics that i could possibly use, and looking at shops, (wholesale and retail), for fabrics. Im not completly sure on the final fabrics, but i know that i want lightweight ones as the collection is for Spring/Summer.

As well as working on my collection, I have also got to produce a 6000 word dissertation. This can be written about anything as long as it links with fashion. I originally wanted to write about my conecpt, The Seven Deadly Sins. But after speaking to my tutor I think it is going to be too hard to link it completly with Fashion in written form. I have now decided to write about one of the Sins - Lust, and how this is hugely linked with fashion. I will include its aspect of desire, how it sells from shop window displays, and also how it is a huge emotion that gets shown more often than we realise. I am currently in the research stage of this, and I am looking for anything that i feel will help me, from books to 3D forms.

My Collection

My final year collection is based on The 7 Deadly Sins. I have looked into each one and got a lot of research about each one that I have kept in individual folders! I feel I relate to all The Sins and I am currently in the process of making my research more personal and how I feel they should all be expressed.

The 7 Sins are Anger, Greed, Gluttony, Lust, Pride, Sloth and Envy. They are all very different and I want my collection to reflect that. I don't want any of the clothes to look the same, but I want the viewers to be able to see that they are all from the same idea. I am going to focus on Spring/ Summer clothing, aimed at consumers from the High Street aged between 20/30.
